Operation Christmas Child

image

Rolls of shiny Christmas paper and ribbons covered the floors at Central Training Group to decorate 29 presents for Operation Christmas Child.

The aim was to donate 20 presents but the ever-so generous bunch at Central Training Team added an extra 9 presents to the festive pile so more children would have a present to wake up to this Christmas morning.

Operation Christmas Child is an initiative of Samaritan’s Purse which has been running for 19 years.   The appeal distribute shoeboxes filled with gifts donated by schools, churches and companies to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Last year, through Operation Christmas Child, over 1.2 million shoeboxes packed full of gifts and goodies were wrapped, packed and sent to children in disadvantaged situations by children and adults in the UK.

A massive ‘Thank you’ to Keryl Titmus who organised the Christmas donation on behalf of Central Training Group.

Wellies to Work

image

Joshua Galvin @ Central took part in the first Wellies to Work day, organised by leading children’s charity Action Medical Research, on Friday 18 September and it was a ‘welly welly successful’ event.  Joshua Galvin @ Central raised money for the charity, which funds research into conditions affecting babies and children.  The first Wellies to Work day was supported by top TV presenter Davina McCall, who encouraged the whole nation to pull on their gumboots in the name of charity.

“I feel like I have been involved with Action Medical Research all my life as my grandparents supported the charity.  I am delighted at how successful Wellies to Work has been and how much money has been raised.  I’ve been lucky to have had three healthy children, but I know through friends how hard it is for women who have difficult pregnancies or premature babies.  The money raised will go to research to help find the answers to premature birth and treatments and cures for many other conditions,” explains Davina.

Eight staff at Joshua Galvin @ Central  wore their wellies to work.  Staff really took up the challenge and wore wellies in a range of colours and styles and some even decorated their wellies.

Commenting, Toby Tennant, Head of Relationship Fundraising at Action Medical Research said: “This is the first year of Wellies to Work and we are delighted at not only how much money has been raised, but how creative people have been in their fundraising efforts.  We hope to build on this success and make Wellies to Work an even bigger event next year.  Action Medical Research has made tremendous medical breakthroughs in the past sixty years, and this has been funded purely by fundraising activities, like Wellies to Work.”

Creative talent finds perfect forum

image

THE amazing creativity and imagination shown by a group of young stylists found the perfect forum at this year’s Central Joshua Galvin Photographic Hairdressing Awards.
With categories including Brit Pop and Burlesque, the work was heavily influenced by music, street fashion and the club scene. This led to some of the most creative work ever produced by the competition which is now into it’s sixth year.
Almost 600 entries were received this year and 35 finalists got the chance to recreate their look for a finals show held at the Wella World Studio in London.
Jasmin Skaife, Head of Hairdressing for Joshua Galvin, was a member of the judging panel and felt the standard of work had never been so high.
She said: “I think the categories this year really suited the young entrants and they were inspired by influences they really understood and respected. As a result the styles were amazingly diverse while the make-up and overall styling produced a superb total look in many cases.”
All finalists received a trophy, professional scissors, £100 worth of Wella vouchers and mounted pictures showing the look they created. In addition, overall category winners received a pair of thinning scissors and a special trophy.
Winners of the popular Burlesque category, JAVA for Hair from Chelmsford in Essex, also received a special extra gift from competition sponsors, Wella, of two tickets to the Trend Vision final to be held later this year.

Sir Alan Sugar, 'you're hired!'

image

Secretaries of State Ed Balls (DCSF) and John Denham (DIUS) held an informal discussion, with a handful of respected apprentices’ employers and training providers.
This was an opportunity to explain to the ministers how Apprenticeships impact on their day to day work.
Billy Moore and Sue Irons from Central Hairdressing Academy along with Gabby Harris from Headlines Hairdressing, were there to speak on behalf of the Hairdressing industry.
There was a real buzz in the air when the ministers announced a special guest would be joining us at each table to listen to what we had to say and answer any questions we had.
The special guest was none other than Sir Alan Sugar.
Billy Moore said “Sir Alan has been employed as the new face of Apprenticeships, he has always been a hero of mine and it was great to sit around a table and discuss the business of apprentices with him.
The morning was a great insight into the future of apprentices and the future is a bright one.”
Sir Alan you’re definitely hired.
